Recognizing the Island's extraordinary natural resources and its high energy costs, the US Department of Energy awarded a grant to encourage Block Islanders to install renewable energy projects. 

Block Island's history of self-reliance and environmental awareness provided an excellent opportunity for renewable energy technology.  By taking advantage of renewable energy, Block Islanders reduced their dependence on imported and expensive fossil fuel.

By using clean and abundant solar and wind energy, Block Islanders decreased energy's impact on the island's delicate resources and helping to preserve what is best about Block Island's natural beauty.
